July 1, 2009 – A reception last night on board the visiting destroyer USS Arleigh Burke marked the 233rd United States Independence Day celebrations in Seychelles.
The event, hosted by US charge d’affaires Virginia Blaser, was attended by President James Michel and First Lady Nathalie Michel.
Foreign Affairs Minister Patrick Pillay said at the reception: “The ties of friendship and cooperation between the US and Seychelles are long standing. Despite the years that have elapsed since we had a permanent US presence in Seychelles, our two countries enjoy cordial relations, visible through military cooperation, training in various areas and civil projects which impact positively on the Seychellois society.”
Mrs Blaser said today the two countries’ relations are not only between our governments but also between the people, and our cooperation includes partnerships with other countries, for example, to combat piracy and economic difficulties.
“We must strengthen our partnership,” she said.
