Remain united, President tells nation
|
February 1, 2010 -- The President, Mr James A Michel, last night called on all Seychellois to remain united despite our diversity of opinion. He stressed that unity was the key to more development and prosperity for our country.
President Michel, speaking last night in the En Moman Avek Prezidan broadcast, elaborated the new year’s national theme of Together, Ready for the Future.
The programme was aired last night on SBC television and will be repeated this evening on radio.
Talking about the chosen theme, Mr Michel said: “The aspect of coming together, unity, dialogue, consultations and listening all form part of the way I govern.”
“For me, they are fundamental principles in which I firmly believe. As a leader, it is my duty to promote unity in peace and build a country where peace and stability reign and at the same time allow us to express and live our diversity through peace and tolerance.
“I believe it is also my duty to promote unity when and how I can.”
Mr Michel said a person can have the best vision and can deliver the best speeches, but if he does not have the ability to bring people together in unity he cannot make his vision a reality.
“This is why I believe that in a small country like Seychelles, where we live in harmony, it is important that we continue to bring people together to create the unity that will ensure the continued prosperity of our country. And togetherness is my style of work, my brand,” he added.
The President said Together, Ready for the Future means we are ready to continue the work on the foundations that we have already put in place, leading us to a more prosperous future.
Mr Michel said we are ready because the theme is not new, as some of its aspects have featured prominently in previous years – such as Celebrate Seychelles, Together for the Love of Seychelles and Come Together, Seychellois – all of which evoke our patriotism and love for our country.
“And today I firmly believe that when we are united we are strong and resilient, and this is what makes us ready for the future,” he said.
Mr Michel expressed his pleasure over the fact that most our people have responded to the call to come together, and “this has allowed us to overcome our difficulties and face the challenges of 2009 so today we are better prepared for the future”.
“Seychellois in their majority have come together and are ready to work for their country,” he said.
The President pointed out that it is a pity that the leadership of the opposition snubbed the invitation to work together, but the important thing is most people, in spite of their diverse political opinions, responded to the call.
“This shows that the people have succeeded, Seychelles has succeeded, and the leadership of the opposition have missed an opportunity to be part of the historic transformation of our country,” he said.
Asked whether this year he will again extend an invitation to the opposition, Mr Michel said he will always call for unity in the country and he will always call on all Seychellois to work together for the prosperity of our country.
“What is important for me is Seychelles. All the work I do is for the prosperity of Seychelles. My doors are always open and I will always promote the spirit of unity,” he said.
He stressed the fact that Seychelles is a small country with a small population, and it is only through unity that we can succeed.
“When we say we are ready for the future, I believe we should recognise that we have lived and should continue to live through a transformation on all fronts,” he said.
“The year 2009 has seen a transformation in how the economy works, and today this has brought about a positive result – a strong and resilient economy. But this does not mean we have already established the perfect economic basis. On the contrary, we have put in place a strong foundation on which we need to continue building.”
During the interview, Mr Michel also talked about other issues including the new drive to fight social ills, the need for the changes now taking place in the prison administration and social welfare.
