Prison expansion could get international aid

February 5, 2010 -- There is a consensus among the six banks in Seychelles that they will bring down their interest rates.

In his En Moman Avek Prezidan broadcast on Sunday President James Michel urged banks to review their interest rates on loans. He said the economy now needed oxygen. Lower interest rates on loans would allow for more development and business opportunities, the President said.

The heads of the banks yesterday met with Finance Minister Danny Faure and Central Bank of Seychelles (CBS) governor Pierre Laporte to discuss conditions for lower interest rates. Minister Faure announced that government is no longer issuing treasury bills.

Loganaden Sidambaram, the chairman of the Seychelles Bankers Association, said after the meeting that the commercial banks will announce cuts in their interest rates on loans later this month.
