Decisions Taken By Cabinet on 2nd November 2016

At its meeting of 2nd November 2016, Cabinet approved for Seychelles to sign the International Convention on Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearance.

The signing of the convention is in line with Seychelles' national policies on the protection and promotion of human rights, and will underline Seychelles' commitment to international standards and UN mechanisms on human rights.  It will require the State to criminalise the enforced disappearance of any person, and to safeguard all persons from being subject to such a disappearance.  It will also provide for such crimes to be reported, and for the State to undertake to investigate such disappearances, and make reparations to the victims and their families.  In accordance with Article 64 (4) of the Constitution, the President will now seek the approval of the National Assembly for Seychelles to accede to the Convention.

Cabinet also approved the creation of three Inter-Ministerial Committees that will deal respectively with governance, poverty alleviation and the prevention of drug abuse and rehabilitation.

Cabinet approved for the Public Utilities Corporation to invest in a SCR102M project to provide an additional 8MW power generating capacity to meet the country's growing industrial and residential needs. The government remains committed to the increased use of renewable energy in the long term; the new power generator is one of the measures necessary at this time to provide for the infrastructure required for a smooth transition towards greater dependence on renewable energy.

Cabinet also approved for PUC to invest in a Є8.2M project to purchase eight additional containerised desalination plants each capable of producing 3,000 m3 of water per day.  The new desalination plants will allow PUC to meet increasing water demand, as well as cater for any shortfall during the estimated 2-year period when work would be undertaken on La Gogue Dam to increase its storage capacity by 60% to 1.6M m3.
