Mrs Nicole Tirant-Ghérardi was sworn in as the new Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission in the presence of President Danny Faure, during a ceremony held at State House this morning.
Mrs Tirant-Ghérardi has been appointed under Section 3(1) 3 of the Protection of Human Rights Act 2009, which provides for the Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission to be the person appointed as Ombudsman under article 143 (1) of the Constitution.
Section 3 (1) 5 of the Protection of Human Rights Act 2009 also provides for the President of the Republic to appoint the Chairperson and other members of the Commission in consultation with the Chief Justice and the Speaker of the National Assembly and for such appointments to be published in the Gazette. Mrs. Nicole Tirant-Ghérardi was sworn in as Ombudsman on 30th March 2017.
Mrs Tirant-Ghérardi holds a Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of Liverpool in the UK. She is an experienced Seychellois Barrister and Attorney-at-Law, with a special interest in criminal defence and appeals, family law, employment law, and international trade issues.From 1999 to 2010 she worked as the Secretary General of the Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI). Mrs Tirant-Ghérardi was also the News Editor and founding member of TODAY Publishers.
During the swearing in ceremony, Mrs Tirant-Ghérardi took two oaths: the Oath of Allegiance and the Official Oath.
Also present for the ceremony at State House was the Vice-President, Mr Vincent Meriton, the Designated Minister, Mrs Macsuzy Mondon, Justice Ranjan Perera, Secretary of State for Cabinet Affairs, Mr Mohammed Afif, Secretary of State for Presidential Affairs, Mrs Aude Labaleine, Diplomatic Adviser to the President, Ambassador Callixte D’Offay, officials in the Office of the President and other distinguished guests.
