President Faure Presented with the Truth, Reconciliation and National Unity report

The President of the Republic, Mr Danny Faure received the Chairman and Members of the Truth, Reconciliation and National Unity Committee of the National Assembly, at State House, this morning.

During the meeting, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon Nicholas Prea, who is also a member of the Committee presented President Faure with an official copy of the Committee’s Report.
The Committee is chaired by Hon Wavel Ramkalawan.  The Leader of Government Business, Mr Charles de Commarmond is the Vice-Chairperson.  Other Members of the Committee are Hon Bernard Georges, Hon Simon Gill, Hon François Adelaide, and Hon Basil Hoareau.

The Committee was set up by the National Assembly in 2017 to begin the groundwork for the creation of a national, independent truth and reconciliation commission, with a view to settling past political divisions since the 1977 Coup D’état, and uniting the country around a common agenda for the future.

President Faure thanked the Committee, its legal advisors and Secretariat for the work they had undertaken in the preparation and compilation of the Report.

One of the recommendations of the Report is the enactment of a law to establish a Truth, Reconciliation and National Unity Commission, with the aim of promoting national unity and reconciliation.

President Faure said the that Report and the proposed legislation will be submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers at its next Meeting on 20th June 2018 which would allow the Bill to be published as a special Gazette on Friday 22nd June 2018.
