The seychelles Young Leaders Programme (SYLP) |
The Seychelles Young Leaders Programme (SYLP) is a new project announced by President James Michel in his National Day address 2007. The main focus of this project is to bring together and groom potential Seychellois leaders who have demonstrated leadership capability or share a clear commitment to shaping and serving our Nation’s future. This initiative, will consist of a program that will have as its target to uncover tomorrow’s potential leaders. Thus providing successful applicants with the opportunities to develop the skills, ethics and values conducive to being not only effective citizens but also to be tomorrow’s leaders.
As Seychelles strives to realize its ‘Strategy 2017’, there is a need for the country to address the reality that natural attrition, early retirement, increased career mobility and such like produce in leadership positions throughout an organisation let alone our country. Furthermore, at the pace of global advancements, it is becoming ever more critical that tomorrow’s leaders are appropriately equipped to develop and lead new global and technological initiatives for the further development of Seychelles. Vision
‘To develop world class leaders through effective leadership training programmes that empower and equip participants to conquer the challenges facing private organisations and the public sector of tomorrow”.
The Goals
- Develop a core of 25 young leaders every two years
- Develop up-dated leadership training curricula relevant to the country’s needs as well as globally
- Create a circle of Mentors
- Create international linkages with young leadership organisations
- Develop local capability to deliver relevant training as much as possible
Strategy
The strategy of the SYLP is guided by the vision and direction of ‘Seychelles’ Strategy 2017’. In order to ensure the sustainable development of the Country, the SYLP will require the close collaboration and support of key government leaders and private stakeholders.
The SYLP recognises that preparation of future leaders is not a feat it can accomplish on its own; rather it believes that organisations in themselves play an important role in reviewing their future direction and identifying the types of leaders they will require over the medium and longer term. In addition, participants must be committed to continued self improvement/development while at the same time sharing an interest in seeing the organisation, and country as a whole, advance further.
Successful leadership is not static.
It is dynamic and innovative and so too must any programme be if it is to see the budding of new young leaders. The SYLP will of necessity be engaged in a continuous and fruitful cycle of turning ideas into action, and action into ideas, developing new views of leadership, new assessment techniques, programs and strategies that respond to the evolving challenges faced by the new generation of leaders and their organizations.
