Profile of the Vice-President
Mr. Joseph Belmont |
Vice-President Belmont was born on 1st June 1947 in Grand Anse, Mahe, Seychelles, is married, with four children.
In April 2004, Mr Belmont was appointed Vice-President holding Ministerial portfolios, for Tourism, Transport and Public Administration.
He was subsequently elected to the high office in July 2006 as the running mate to President James Alix Michel.
Vice President Belmont presently holds the portfolio responsibilities for Internal Affairs, Public Administration and Tourism.
He was first appointed as Minister in 1982 when he became Minister for Labour and Social Security until 1985.
From 1985 to 1995 he held four Ministerial portfolios.
They were: Manpower and Social Services (twice), Health and Social Services, and Administration and Manpower.
From 1993 – 1996 he was appointed as Second Designated Minister and Minister for Administration and Manpower. From 1996 to 2004 he was appointed Designated Minister and Minister for Administration and Manpower; 1998-1999, Minister for Industries and International Business; 2000 – 2004, Minister for Land Use and Habitat; January 2004 to April 2007, Minister for Tourism and Transport.
In 1970 he was appointed Senior Agricultural Officer and was subsequently promoted to the post of Chief Agricultural Officer in 1979, a position which he held until 1980 when he was appointed General Manager of the Islands Development Company Limited - (IDC).
Mr. Belmont completed his Primary School at the Grand Anse Mahe School in 1958. In 1965 Mr Belmont completed his Secondary School at Seychelles College Grammar School.
He graduated as Ingénieur Agronome, Ecole Nationale Supérieure Agronomique, Université de Madagascar, Tananarive, in 1970 and in 1975, he graduated with a Master of Science degree in Tropical Agricultural Development, from University of Reading, United Kingdom.
