Thu, 18 December 2014

President James Michel has expressed his heartfelt congratulations to Archbishop Emeritus of the Indian Ocean, French Chang Him upon being elevated to the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

“Your elevation to the Order of the British Empire is testimony to your standing as a man of peace, justice and courage not only in Seychelles, but also internationally, especially in the Commonwealth. It is a highly deserved recognition of your lifetime achievements, your dedication and commitment to your calling, and a tribute to your many years of service, with ardour, compassion and humility, to the people of Seychelles. It is also a great honour that has been bestowed on our country, which could not have come at a more appropriate time as we prepare to celebrate Christmas,” said President Michel in a letter.

“Assuring you always of my support, I wish you continued good health, perseverance and happiness in your vocation. May I also take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year”.

The British government presented the award to recognise Archbishop Chang-Him’s services to reconciliation, human rights, charity and democratic values as well as his invaluable service to British nationals in Seychelles, past and present.

To note, the award of the OBE to Archbishop Chang-Him is the first award of an order of chivalry in the British and Commonwealth honours systems to a Seychellois citizen in 35 years in over three decades.
