President Faure assents to the Elections (Amendment) Act 2018

The President of the Republic, Mr Danny Faure, today assented to the Elections (Amendment) Act 2018. The Elections Act (Amendment) Bill was approved at the Cabinet Meeting of Wednesday 5 December this year and published in the Official Gazette on Thursday 6 December.

The signing was witnessed by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Luciana Lagrenade.

The Act will now permit the Electoral Commission to have a Chief Electoral Officer to head the Secretariat, to administer and apply the Act.

It is the first time that there will be a separation in terms of administering the Commission and the Secretariat. As the Chief Electoral Officer, the person appointed will be responsible for the good preparation if at any time there is an election, and the proper implementation of the electoral cycles.

It is expected that the post will be advertised publicly by 7 January 2019.
