Barcelona, Spain 13 April 2024: Whilst in Barcelona, Spain for the 2024 United National Ocean Decade Conference, the President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr Wavel Ramkalawan was the guest of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II at a private screening of the of documentary movie “Mission Saving Paradise Expedition to the last treasures of the Indian Ocean” in which Seychelles, along with other sister island nations Reunion and Mauritius are featured.

A product of the Monaco Explorations, spearheaded by His Serene Highness, Prince Albert II of Monaco alongside key partners and stakeholders such as the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustained development and

President Ramkalawan acknowledged the expedition during his keynote address at the opening of the Oceans conference where he said: “We are immensely grateful for our inclusion as part of the Monaco Explorations under the auspices of His Serene Highness Prince Albert through the documentary entitled “Mission Saving Paradise” which was a culmination of the Indian Ocean expedition of 2023. This scientific expedition was significantly dedicated to the multidisciplinary investigation of the Aldabra atoll and the Saya de Malha bank. During this research mission many specimens were studied, lost species were re-discovered and new species were also potentially discovered. I must note that 18 Seychellois scientists had the opportunity to be part of this expedition, underlying our commitment to ensure that our very own scientists, especially young early career scientists also benefit from the research opportunities happening in our ocean space. ”

Following the screening, the production team were present to share their experience and answer questions from the audience.  

At the screening, President Ramkalawan also had the opportunity to meet and interact with two young Seychellois Scientists and Eco-warriors, Sheena Talma and Natalia Lawen currently in Spain participating in the 2024 UN Ocean Decade Conference.

Following his participation at the 2024 UN Ocean Decade Conference the President will proceed to Greece for the 9th Our Ocean Conference to be held in Athens.
