President meets first Seychellois Green Champion Award recipient

President Danny Faure received Seychelles’ first-ever Green Champions award recipient, Mr Wills Agricole, also the Principal Secretary for Energy and Climate Change, at State House yesterday morning.

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) launched the Green Champions awards to recognise and promote the most noteworthy and successful efforts to combat climate change. The GCF Green Champions awards recognise outstanding individuals and organisations driving climate transformation. The awards promote initiatives that stand as examples of environmental, social and business-led commitments of climate action.

President Faure formally congratulated Mr Agricole for the recognition, which he described as testimony to Mr Agricole’s many years of hard work toward the cause of climate action and also a great honour for the country.

“Seychelles is proud of you, and today I would like to convey my congratulations for your achievements in the field of climate action. It is my hope that you continue to inspire others, especially our young people,” said President Faure.

Launched by the Green Climate Fund in 2010, Mr Agricole received his Transformational Country Green champion award in Spain recently during his participation at the United Nations climate change conference (COP25) from December 2-13 in Madrid.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Mr Agricole said he was honoured to be received by the President today and proud to have been chosen for such a prestigious international award coming from a Small Island State and working to tackle climate change.
