President Herminie Tours St Mary’s Hospital During Official Visit on La Digue

Continuing his official visit on La Digue, President of the Republic of Seychelles, Dr Patrick Herminie, today toured the new St Mary’s Hospital alongside the Member of the National Assembly for Inner Islands, Hon. Rocky Uranie the Minister for Health Dr Marvin Fanny, and the Minister for Local Government and Inner Islands, Ms Eveline Rose.

The visit formed the President’s second stop on the island and provided an opportunity for discussions on healthcare services and infrastructure available to the La Digue community.

St Mary’s Hospital officially became operational on 23 October 2023 following the complete transfer of services from the former Logan Hospital, which ceased operations once the transition to the new facility was finalised.

According to the Minister Fanny, noted that one of the main issues is related to having the need for dedicated transport to transfer patients from the jetty to the hospital. In response, President Herminie pledged to allocate a twin cab vehicle to assist with the transportation.

Additional concerns raised included the provision of uniforms for all staff within the ministry, staffing constraints, and the need for continuous maintenance and upkeep of the hospital infrastructure.

The modern healthcare facility was officially inaugurated on 15 August 2023 and is regarded as one of the most advanced medical facilities in Seychelles.

The hospital provides a range of essential healthcare services, including emergency care, surgery and maternity services, x-ray and ultrasound facilities, dialysis treatment, as well as laboratory and pharmacy services.

During the tour, the President was briefed on the hospital’s operations, capabilities and the services currently available to residents of La Digue.

The construction of the hospital was made possible through funding support from the United Arab Emirates together with contributions from the La Digue Hospital Fund.

The President also visited the former Ex Lagoon hospital site, where plans are underway to transform the facility into a government house that will serve as a one stop centre for public services on La Digue.

Historical footnote:

The name “St Mary’s” also carries historical and cultural significance for the island, reflecting La Digue’s strong Catholic heritage and its longstanding association with Notre Dame de L'Assomption Church.
