Seychelles Mourns The Loss Of Former Irish Prime Minister

May 20, 2011 -- President James Michel has sent a message of condolence to the government and people of Ireland following the passing of former Prime Minister Garret FitzGerald, who he described as a personal friend.

"I had the good fortune of knowing Dr Fitzgerald and he has been of immense assistance to us in our economic reform programme. We owe him a debt of gratitude for his support. He was very fond of Seychelles and I considered him a personal friend and a great friend of our country," President message said.

The message, which was conveyed on behalf of the people and government of Seychelles, described the former Prime Minister as a courageous leader, who has left behind a great legacy of peace and reconciliation.

"His courage in the face of adversity was admirable and he will be mourned not only by Ireland, but by the whole world and the people who knew him," added the President.

Dr Fitzgerald, who is credited with starting the peace process in Ireland and liberalising its economy, passed away yesterday in hospital following a short illness. He last visited Seychelles in April 2010 for the launching of President Michel's book A Man of the People.
