Senior Citizens Celebration

President James Michel yesterday hosted the traditional November 16 reception for elderly citizens, in the State House garden.

The reception traditionally coincides with the birth of former President France Albert Rene, who turned 76 yesterday.

"We wish President Rene a very happy 76th birthday... President Rene is unable to attend this celebration as he has the flu... We thank him for his hard work and devotion to his country and people, for the solid foundation he built, on which we are building on for the future generations," said President Michel in his address to the senior citizens.

President Rene had sent a message to the senior citizens to say that even though he was unable to come to the celebration, he was with them in spirit  and that he thanked them all for coming to celebrate this important moment.

President Michel also thanked all the senior citizens of the country for the important role they play in society.

"The elders of our country need to continue to educate the younger generations, and remind them that our country has come a long way in its development. They need to share their wisdom so that we can all benefit from their knowledge and experience," said President Michel.

The annual reception for senior citizens was originally introduced by Former President France Albert René on his birthday as a mark of respect and appreciation for the contribution of the older generation to Seychellois society.
