Mr. Alix Sebastien Pillay Sworn in as Vice President of the Republic of Seychelles

Mr. Alix Sebastien Pillay was officially sworn in as the Vice President of the Republic of Seychelles during a solemn ceremony held at State House on Tuesday morning.

The ceremony was presided over by the President of the Republic, Dr. Patrick Herminie, in the presence of distinguished guests, family members, and close friends of the newly appointed Vice President.

During the proceedings, Vice President Pillay took the Oath of Allegiance to the Constitution and the Vice-Presidential Oath, formally assuming his duties as the Vice President of the Republic of Seychelles.

Vice President Pillay brings with him over two decades of dedicated public service. He holds a Bachelor of Education in mathematics from Edith Cowan University in Western Australia and a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Innovation from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. His professional journey began in the education sector with the Ministry of Education and later at the University of Seychelles, where he served as a Lecturer, before his appointment as Director General for Cabinet and Presidential Affairs.

Since 2011, Mr. Pillay has been a Member of the National Assembly, serving across three consecutive parliamentary cohorts for more than fourteen years. In his capacity as Leader of the Opposition and Chair of the Finance and Public Accounts Committee, he played a pivotal role in shaping key legislative frameworks, including amendments to the Constitution, the Standing Orders of the National Assembly, and the Employment Act.

Addressing the ceremony, President Dr. Patrick Herminie congratulated Vice President Pillay on his appointment. The President said that their shared journey of leadership is founded on mutual respect, collaboration, and a shared vision for national unity and progress.

“As you take up the role of Vice President, know that you carry the hopes of our nation. You stand beside a President committed to partnership, and together you embody the unity and renewal that our people deserve,” President Herminie stated.

The ceremony concluded with a moving patriotic performance by renowned local artist Jean-Marc Volcy, followed by a souvenir photo session and light refreshments, marking a historic moment of transition, continuity, and renewed leadership for the Republic of Seychelles.

Also in attendance were the First Lady, Mrs. Veronique Herminie; Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Rony Govinden; Acting President of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice Fiona Robinson; Former President of the Republic, Mr. Danny Faure; Chief of Defence Forces, Major General Michael Rosette; Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ted Barbe; Attorney General, Mr. Vinsent Perera; Members of the Constitutional Appointments Authority; Cabinet Secretary, Ms. Margaret Moumou; Bishop of the Catholic Church, Bishop Alain Harel; Bishop of the Anglican Diocese and Chairman of SIFCO, Bishop Danny Elizabeth; and other distinguished guests.

The event marked a defining chapter in the nation’s governance, one that reaffirms Seychelles enduring commitment to democracy, service, and the pursuit of a shared national vision.
